You just lost the game

There are many reasons that we have not been blogging as frequently as we would like. The least likely and least accurate is this one.

We have been playing the game (I just lost the game).

I first found out about the game when I was looking for an anniversary present. I stumbled over a book (the title of which eludes me) about ways to avoid boredom. In this book, the rules of a game were written down. The game was ascribed to Cambridge students, though a brief search of online sources suggests this is as likely as not completely made up. There are three rules, as follows:

  1. Everyone in the world is playing The Game. A person cannot not play The Game; it does not require consent to play and one can never stop playing.
  2. Whenever one thinks about The Game, one loses.
  3. Losses must be announced to at least one person (either by using a statement such as “I lost The Game” or by alternative means).

Of course, this kind of thing is nothing new – but on a return visit to the bookshop, CIA ended up playing the game too (my verbal attempts to persuade her having failed miserably, nevertheless made my game-playing more straightforward). The result is surprise attacks, like this one:

The Game

And now? All I have to say is, although we will try to blog more regularly (if not frequently), you did just lose the game.

Let them eat cake

We had a birthday in our house a few days ago (yay PJD!). To mark this special occasion, I baked a cake. I went in search of a most delicious chocolate cake recipe, which not only had to be relatively easy to make, with not too many ingredients, but which also had to be scrumptious in the way that chocolate-cakes-when-you-were-young tasted. After much leafing through recipe books, um-ing and ah-ing over which recipe looked and sounded the best (sometimes it’s easy to get drawn in by an amazing looking photo in a cookbook only to discover the recipe is overly complicated – don’t you agree?!), I settled on an aptly (if somewhat un-originally) named “Never-fail birthday chocolate cake with chocolate icing”. This recipe comes courtesy of Australian cook Bill Granger, found in one of the most reliable go-to books in my cookbook collection, Bill’s Holiday.

To be lost in a forest

Okay so it’s been a while since I promised I’d post about Bloc Party’s recent concert in Auckland, but I’m hoping it’s a case of better late than never. This was the second time in less than a year that I’d had the privilege of seeing these boys from London take to the stage (the first being at Zurich Open Air last August) and they absolutely delivered second-time around as good as if it was the first. The Powerstation provided a venue of perfect proportions (not too big, not too small, great acoustics) and the crowd was suitably excited. After all, it had been six years since Bloc Party had toured these distant shores.

Best party on the bloc

Bloc Party visited New Zealand this week. It had been six long years since they had last seen these shores. Yes, they kept us waiting, but the wait sure was worth it…

Bloc Party

…I think it probably made the concert even better than we had hoped it would be. More tomorrow!

Whispers from space

Whispers from space

It’s hard to imagine scientists came up with this sign. But I guess that’s why you have marketing. Also, I appreciate the fact they included two-way radio.  It really adds a sense of awesome.

Sitting pretty

Recently we journeyed to the top of New Zealand’s South Island, to one of the sunshine hubs of the country, Blenheim. During our travels I spied this shelf of teacups in a cafe, which were so sweet, I just had to take a picture.
